An Epidemiologic Study on Procedure-related Infection in an University Hospital, Seoul

Abstract
Nosocomial infections are serious complicaton of modern hospital care. Patients who acquire nosocomial infection endure considerable increases in morbidity, mortality, medical expenses, and duration of hospitalization.
This study was undertaken to investigate the incidence of invasive procedure related nosocomial infection, which potentially are preventable.
The data were collected from January 1 to February 29, 1992 and analysed.
@ES The results obtained are as follows:
@EN 1. The number of procedure-related nosocomial infection was 95 cases among 1195 cases, and thus the infection rate was 7.9%.
2. The rates of procedure-related nosocomial infection by type of procedure were 66.6% in embolization, 66.6% in PTC 50.0% in TIPS, 27.6% in PCN and 14.3% in angiography.
3. The bacterial cultures done on 31 cases of procedure-related nosocomial infection revealed 24 cases of negative culture and 7 positive cases with signle organism. The causative organisms of nosocomial infection were Serratia marcescens,
Klebsiella
pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Salmonella Gr D Streptococcus sanguis, and Enterococcus faecium
4. In this analysis, the contributing factors showing procedure-related nosocomial infection were type of procedure, purpose of procedure, primary discharge diagnosis and type of place where procedure was performed(p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.05,
p<0.001).
This study results suggest that further research for prevention of invasive procedure-related nosocomial infection is indispensable.
